I am primarily a painter, currently living in Brighton and have recently completed a BA in Fine Art Painting at the University of Brighton.

The work is an exploration of the materiality of paint, gestural abstraction, mark making and colour. By combining and layering different painting processes, the bold and vibrant paintings aim to display a number of relationships and juxtapositions. The paintings are almost like a balancing act of different ways of applying paint. For example the relationship between the static, carefully placed painted mark with the more expressive improvisational brushwork as well as the stark contrast between flat areas of block colour and heavily applied paint. Ideas of the relationship between figure and ground and how this can be achieved with abstract imagery also comes into play. These contradictions contribute to the desire to create paintings that explore contrasting ways of portraying gesture and mark making without the use of representational imagery.

The forms within the paintings originate from small doodles which are largely from my imagination however are often informed by both the natural world and microscopic images. These strange forms have a biomorphic quality whereas the colours used are very synthetic. The colour combinations are ones we wouldn’t normally see in the natural world but could be associated with the commercial or unnatural. Using these colours to paint shapes considered organic disassociate the paintings with the world around us therefore creating something both unfamiliar and unrecognisable.
