I am an abstract painter from London currently living and working in Cairns, Far Noth Queensland.
My work is an exploration of the materiality of paint, gestural abstraction, mark making and colour. By combining and layering different painting processes, the bold and vibrant paintings aim to display a number of relationships and juxtapositions. The paintings are almost like a balancing act of different ways of applying paint. For example the relationship between the static, carefully placed painted mark with the more expressive improvisational brushwork as well as the stark contrast between flat areas of block colour and heavily applied paint. Ideas of the relationship between figure and ground and how this can be achieved with abstract imagery also comes into play. These contradictions contribute to the desire to create paintings that explore contrasting ways of portraying gesture and mark making without the use of representational imagery.
